Book Review: The Connected and Committed Leader

Book Review: The Connected and Committed Leader

Anyone who has been trying to get their home in order definitely needs this book.  We know that at home we really try to make sure all appointments are made and that tasks are completed within an acceptable amount of time.  Well the lessons you learn in your home you can take with you to your job.

I read The Connected and Committed Leader – Lessons from Home. Results at Work.  I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed the book and it’s one that I refer back to often.  You wouldn’t really think about leading from your heart at work.  It seems we have all been programmed to think and make leadership decisions at work by experience and by what has already been done.  But what about taking a chance and leading from the heart?   It’s just what we do at home.

Laura Lopez gives you real world approaches to this type of leadership that will definitely help you be successful.  One of her quotes she has in the book says “Everybody and anybody can command and control.”  This is so true.  As a middle manager in my previous life I found many examples of my first line supervisors who thought they could bark out orders and get things done.  While that may help with a few people, it will not move the masses.  When you really try to find out the right thing to do by inspiring and leading with the heart there is an immediate change.

Most people think you have to put on your ‘work face’ but when you get home you can be the real you.  Actually you can show the real you in both places.  You inspire your workers to complete tasks.  Laura goes on to say that you can’t really tell a child to do something and always have that project completed.  I know this from a first hand basis.  My little four year old has a definite mind of his own.  But if I can move him to do something by inspiration that kicks in his ‘will’ to do it that is all the more better.  Using the ‘will’ for good…….ahhh I like that.  Of course when you are dealing with adults its not all that easy or is it?  Laura talks about seven insights that I believe anyone who leads people should have or strive to have.

Just think….never again will you have to scratch your head at work and say why won’t this person work to his or her full potential.  If you are a leader or would like to be one this is a definite book for you.  Read it and then read it again with your highlighter.  Then keep it close to you so you can refer back.
